Borgo Pignano is a historic Tuscan estate – a 13th-century hilltop hamlet and 18th-century villa – transformed into a model of sustainable luxury. Spread across 750 acres of organic farmland, forests, vineyards and gardens, this relais has meticulously restored its stone villas and farmhouses using eco-friendly methods: local stone, reclaimed wood, natural lime plasters, and solar panels discreetly integrated into traditional roofs.
The estate is a certified organic farm: its olive groves, biodynamic vegetable gardens, heritage fruit orchard, beehives, and grain fields supply much of the ingredients for the on-site restaurants. Farm-to-table is a way of life here – guests dine on freshly milled ancient-grain breads, seasonal produce picked steps away, organic extra-virgin olive oil pressed on the property, and wines from the estate’s own vineyard (all vegan and organic).
Borgo Pignano’s sustainability efforts are both high-tech and old-world: an innovative rainwater catchment and swale system prevents soil erosion and irrigates crops during dry spells, while wood-chip biomass boilers and solar arrays generate clean energy for heating and hot water. The estate also actively contributes to the local community: over 80% of its staff are hired locally and trained in its eco-values; it partners with nearby artisans for everything from organic soaps to handmade ceramics in the rooms; and its on-site contemporary art gallery showcases Tuscan artists.
Guests can take guided nature walks to learn about Pignano’s rewilding initiatives (wildflower meadows for pollinators, preserving ancient oak stands) or join a beekeeping lesson to see sustainable agriculture in action. In the infinity pool perched above the Volterra hills, purified with minimal chlorine, or during a spa treatment using home-grown lavender and rosemary, you’ll feel Borgo Pignano’s ethos: that elegant living and environmental stewardship can be one and the same.
