La Grée des Landes is a pioneering eco-hotel and spa in La Gacilly, Brittany, created by the Yves Rocher family in 2009. The hotel’s architecture is strikingly sustainable. A vast green roof insulates the main building while blending it into the landscape — sheep even graze on it. Local slate and wood were used in construction, while passive solar orientation and high-performance insulation earned the property HQE (High Environmental Quality) certification.
Heating and hot water come from geothermal energy and wood-pellet boilers, virtually eliminating fossil fuel use on-site. In fact, La Grée des Landes produces renewable energy surplus that is fed back into the grid, making it a leader in carbon-conscious hospitality.
The 29 guest rooms are minimalist yet warm, furnished with eco-certified paints, fabrics, and flooring free from harmful chemicals. Each room opens onto a private terrace with views of wildflower meadows or the natural swimming pool.
The outdoor eco-pool is filtered entirely by plants and minerals, with no chlorine — a pioneering feature when the hotel first opened, reflecting Yves Rocher’s commitment to gentle, natural methods.
The Yves Rocher Spa is at the heart of the hotel’s philosophy. Treatments use 100% organic, biodegradable skincare products, many crafted nearby at Yves Rocher’s laboratories with plants grown in La Gacilly. The hammam and sauna are powered by solar-heated water, while all spa linens are washed with eco-friendly detergents. Guests enjoy a wellness experience that is indulgent, natural, and respectful of the planet.
The hotel’s restaurant, Les Jardins Sauvages, is one of the few in France to be 100% organic and seasonal. Awarded a Michelin Green Star, it practices nose-to-tail and root-to-leaf cooking to minimize waste. Chef Gilles Le Gallès crafts creative Breton cuisine using vegetables from the hotel’s organic gardens, produce from local farms, and in-house baked breads made with organic flour.
Menus change constantly with the seasons, and guests can even help harvest herbs and vegetables in the morning that appear on their plate at dinner.
Half of the hotel’s 10-hectare property is dedicated to a protected nature reserve with wetlands, hedgerows, and habitats for local wildlife. Water management is exemplary: rainwater is collected for toilets and irrigation, and wastewater is treated through phyto-purification ponds filled with reeds, frogs, and dragonflies.
