Off the grid
Loire Valley Lodges is a one-of-a-kind eco-retreat in France, offering 18 designer treehouse suites hidden within 300 hectares of private woodland. Conceived by former art dealer Anne-Caroline Frey, the retreat celebrates both the healing power of nature — known as sylvotherapy — and the creativity of contemporary art.
Each treehouse is perched among chestnut and Douglas fir trees, built on stilts to protect root systems and seamlessly integrated into the forest canopy. Constructed from locally sourced wood and featuring green roofs or facades, the lodges blend into the landscape while minimizing impact.
The project embraces a deep eco-conscious ethos. Lodges are intentionally free of Wi-Fi and TVs, offering guests a “digital diet” that encourages reconnection with the rhythms of the forest. Internet is available only at the main reception, far from the treehouses, to preserve the experience of disconnection.
Inside, each lodge is individually designed with bohemian-chic décor, natural linens, and original artworks commissioned for that space. Amenities include organic toiletries and a record player with a curated playlist that matches the lodge’s theme. Floor-to-ceiling windows and expansive terraces immerse guests in the forest, while some treehouses even feature private jacuzzis — perfect for soaking under the stars as owls call in the distance.
Mornings begin with a picnic basket breakfast hoisted to your terrace by rope pulley, filled with croissants, seasonal fruit, artisan cheeses, and honey from the property’s own hives. For dinner, the main lodge’s restaurant, Ardent, serves gourmet farm-to-table cuisine sourced from the estate’s organic gardens and neighboring farms, complemented by fine Loire Valley wines.
Food lovers are also treated to special culinary events: guest chefs cook open-air feasts in the forest, turning the estate into a playground for gastronomy.
Art is woven throughout the retreat. Monumental sculptures are tucked along forest paths, while each lodge contains original works of contemporary art, making every stay a unique creative experience.
Wellness offerings bring guests closer to nature, with yoga classes in forest clearings, open-air massages on private decks, and a 20-meter pool near the main lodge. With no cars allowed, guests move around on foot or by complimentary bicycles, ensuring quiet immersion in the woods.
At night, with no light pollution, the Milky Way fills the sky, and guests drift to sleep to the gentle sounds of the forest. By banning single-use plastics, relying on chemical-free construction, and encouraging low-impact living, Loire Valley Lodges proves that sustainable practices can coexist with indulgent comfort.
This secluded, adults-only retreat is both sensual and restorative, offering a rare escape where art, nature, and eco-luxury converge.
